Detective Series

Encouraging youth to take a closer look at the mysteries of the plant world.

What is the Detective Series?

The Detective Series is a series of activity passports designed to guide youth ages 7 to 10 in the discovery of plant mysteries. Topics include Leaves, Pollination, and Plant Defense. Each passport contains an "Amazing Facts" page as well as a "Detective Project." Inside each are four challenges...things plant detective must search for: a fuzzy leaf, a hairy stem, a flower with a landing platform. Alongside each challenge you'll find "Detective Super Questions" and more amazing facts about the plant world.

The Passports

The Detective Series includes ten Passports:

~ Leaves 1 and 2: Leaf Shapes, Leaves 3 and 4: Leaf Textures
~ Plant Defense 1 and 2
~ Pollination, Pollination: Bees, Pollination: Butterflies, Pollination: Wind

Passports are available for educators, group leaders, and families.

The Program

The Detective Series Program brings all the mysteries and the passports to summer day camps in July and August. Visits include some sleuthing in the plant world with the Detective Series passports as guides as well as Detective Projects. Detective Series Programs can also be scheduled at the Ithaca Children's Garden for visits in June through September. For more information or to schedule a program, contact Leigh MacDonald, 607-272-2292 or lam26@cornell.edu.
