From Outdoor Dance Parties to Discovery — Scholarships Make it Possible

At Ithaca Children’s Garden, we believe every child deserves the chance to explore, play, and grow — regardless of their family’s financial situation. That’s why our annual Scholarship Fund Campaign has an ambitious goal of raising $54,000 by the end of April to provide scholarships for over 100 local families. These scholarships ensure that cost is never a barrier to children experiencing the joy of nature, hands-on learning, and unstructured play.

This month, we spoke with parents whose children have benefited from ICG scholarships. Their stories are a powerful reminder of what’s possible when every child has the opportunity to grow in nature.

As working artists, Molly and her family understand the challenges of balancing creative work with the costs of structured programs for their children. “Funds are beyond tight,” she shared. “I think this scholarship is, in a way, also supporting the local arts community by allowing lower-income families to be included. To me, that’s so important and unique.”

Thanks to the scholarship, Molly’s son Keith has been able to attend ICG programs regularly — an experience that has shaped not just his days, but his development. “Our life basically revolves around the program schedule,” Molly said. “It’s currently our only structured program for either of our two kids.”

Without the scholarship, participating in ICG might not have been possible. “It may not have made sense for our freelance schedules and income,” she explained.

One moment that captures the spirit of Keith’s experience? The spontaneous dance parties. “There have been countless times that I’ve arrived to pick Keith up and he’s in the middle of a group dance party with his friends and teachers,” Molly recalled. “It makes me so happy to see how much spontaneous fun is had by everyone over there.”

The impact of ICG extends far beyond the Garden. “Just today, Keith told me he had some plants in our yard he wanted to show me,” Molly said. “He probably understands plants and the natural world more than me at this point.” She’s also seen Keith’s excitement about teamwork blossom. “He finds achieving goals as a team really thrilling.”

When asked what she would say to other families considering a scholarship, Molly didn’t hesitate: “Incredible. I have recommended the program to so many families and included the fact that there are available scholarships.”

For Molly, the gratitude runs deep. “We love the Children’s Garden! This program has just had such a lovely impact on helping to form Keith’s personality and love for adventure and the outdoors.”

Stories like Molly’s affirm why scholarships are so vital to ICG’s mission. Every child deserves the chance to dance with friends, explore plants, and discover the wonders of the natural world. But we can’t do it alone. Right now, your gift can make an even greater impact. If you donate by April 30, your contribution will be doubled thanks to a matching challenge up to $27,000. We need every penny to meet the community need. Your support directly funds Tompkins County families.
